VCE 2024 update
Currently we are working on the submission of our application to deliver the VCE to Year 11 in 2024 and Year 12 in 2025. As a school looking to expand into VCE and the VCE Vocational Major (VM), we must apply to two separate educational bodies, the VCAA (Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority) and the VRQA (Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority), both of which are due by the end of June, 2023.
We are working closely with MACs (Melbourne Archdiocese of Catholic Schools) to ensure all of the policies, coursework and resources are meeting the expectations for both applications and feel we are more than prepared to submit our application on time.
Teachers have been working hard to complete the VCAA templates for 19 subjects to be offered as of Term One next year. Staff who are experienced in the VCE have been tasked with writing courses over the past 6 months and will continue working on the Year 12 units of study as the year progresses.
St Mary’s College intends to deliver a full complement of VCE subjects from 2023. However, as with most secondary schools; class sizes, resources and staffing availability will be a consideration when putting together the final classes and timetables for students.
Students undertaking the VCE also have the option of completing a VET Certificate II or III course as part of their studies. Some will also continue courses started this year, others will take up something new.
The VCE subjects to be delivered from 2023 are:
- Art – Making and Exhibiting Unit 1 & 2
- Biology Unit 1 & 2
- Business Management Unit 1 & 2
- Chemistry Unit 1 & 2
- English (and EAL) Unit 1 & 2
- English Language Unit 1 & 2

- Physics Unit 1 & 2 (TBC)
- Product Design and Technology Unit 1 & 2
- Psychology Unit 1 & 2
- Religion and Society Unit 2
- Visual Communication Unit 1 & 2
In addition, students will have the option of undertaking the VCE Vocational Major (VM), formerly recognised as the VCAL (Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning).
Subjects to be offered in the VCE VM are:
- Personal Development Skills
- Work Related Skills
- Religion and Society Unit 2
- A Certificate II or III VET course of their choice as part of their compulsory coursework
Students have been involved in several discussions about VCE uniform. Key points include shirt colour, changes to the external jumper or jacket and VCE privileges such as a Year 12 jacket or other distinct items of clothing. Parents will be given the opportunity to voice their opinions on these decisions later in the year.
Booklists are under development by the staff writing the courses. Students will be expected to purchase textbooks and other specified items for their Year 11 and 12 classes.
Year 10 2023 students will receive their 2024 VCE handbooks before they leave for Work Experience at the end of Term 2. This is to encourage families to begin researching possible VCE subjects and pathways over the holidays.
A subject ‘expo’ will be held for students during the day on Thursday 13/7 and a Parent Information evening will be held that same night. This will allow students and parents to ask clarifying questions about subjects, uniform and policy surrounding the incoming VCE, VCE VM and VET.
